Railway closed due to flooding (Sunday 10th August)

Sittingbourne’s Steam Railway is currently closed due to flooding.

As ex-hurricane Bertha passed over, the first train arrived at Kemsley Down station. Meanwhile, in Sittingbourne, many roads were closed due to flash flooding.

Many of the passengers sat through the rain on the train but the heavy rain and thunderstorm prevented the train from departing. Once it had subsided a bit, all passengers where taken back to Sittingbourne Viaduct by train, however, the flooding at Sittingbourne Viaduct was too deep to drive through safely so the train returned them to Kemsley Down, where everyone was taken by road back to Sittingbourne Viaduct. Fortunately, the Railway’s car park is much higher than the flood zone!

There will be no further trains today.

There will be a further announcement regarding trains on Wednesday – please check the website for the latest information.
